This is a very fine vintage statue created in solid bronze. It was originally bought in India in the 1970s and came from a fine collection of Hindu statues.

MEENAKSHI of MADURAI

Meenakshi is the Hindu goddess associated with the temple city ofMadura. The Meenakshi Temple was named after her.

Meenakshi has a parrot on her shoulder. A parrot is a symbol of kama and a symbol of love. Meenakshi is the Goddess of motherly love.

The story of the figure of Meenakshi is legendary. It describes a Pandya king, Malayadhvaja, who hoped for a son and heir. He carefully performed a fire ceremony requesting that the gods fulfill this wish. Instead, he was granted a daughter, Meenakshi.
